URLs as QR Codes

Every android application directory, or every review site that talks about an application, widget or game has attached a QR Code near the download link, just because is very easy when you’re reading something about an application to take out the phone, scan the QR Code and install that on your phone. It’s not commodity or anything else, it’s just efficiency… and maybe you don’t have installed Chrome to Phone or any other related application.

So, if you didn’t installed any application that sends the link to the phone, it’s very simple to instruct your browser (it’s working just for Firefox) to create a QR Code for any link.

First, Create a bookmark for the Google Charts API that produces the QR Codes

http://chart.apis.google.com/chart?chs=150×150&cht=qr&chld=L|1&choe=UTF-8&chl=

Here the main idea is to append your url to the end of the link, after the chl=.So if I append http://android.bytearrays.com it will result this link:

http://chart.apis.google.com/chart?chs=150×150&cht=qr&chld=L|1&choe=UTF-8&chl=http://android.bytearrays.com

that generates the following image which opens this website’s URL when being scanned:

Ok. So, back to our main subject. After creating the bookmark to Google Charts API:

Now, every time you want to create a QR Code for an URL, go to the Firefox URL bar and type:

qr {space} URL {enter}

If you’re already on a website, go to the URL bar, and insert qr {space} in front of the url. Press enter and voila !

Update

A simpler solution is when editing the bookmark, to change the location to:

javascript:l=document.location; document.location.href=’http://chart.apis.google.com/chart?chs=150×150&cht=qr&chld=L|1&choe=UTF-8&chl=’+l;

Leave the Keyword to qr and when you want to get a QR Code for the current page go to the URL bar and type qr and enter.
